Inmarsat FleetBroadband Upgrade Notice

SAILOR FB250/500/Explorer 727 Firmware Update V 1.07

Critical Firmware Update!

Thrane & Thrane has released a new firmware version related to the repositioning of the satellites and their transmission frequencies. It is strongly recommended to upgrade all units as soon as possible.

The new firmware can be downloaded here.

Inmarsat Update Web Link.

Units in the field can receive the new satellite positions and transmission frequencies from the satellite bulletin boards automatically, however, if a factory reset is performed the units will lose this information and as a result the terminal may fail to acquire the satellite.

New I-4 Americas satellite
enters commercial service

Inmarsat is pleased to announce the entry into service of the new
I-4 Americas satellite, providing mobile voice and broadband data coverage for North and South America.

BGAN traffic was successfully transferred from the I-4 F2 satellite at about 09:00 UTC, 7 January 2009.

The start of commercial service on the satellite, formerly known as
I-4 F3, marks the creation of a new Inmarsat satellite coverage region, called “I-4 Americas”.

Optimal data connectivity
The I-4 Americas spacecraft is positioned more directly over the region than the I-4 F2. This makes it easier to point a BGAN terminal at the satellite and, coupled with a higher concentration of spot beams over the landmass, provides optimal data connectivity.

Also, for the first time, BGAN network coverage will be extended to include parts of Western Canada and Alaska.

BGAN users in North and South America now need to re-point their terminals from the I-4 F2 satellite at 53 degrees West to the new I-4 Americas satellite located on the Equator at 98 degrees West, directly south of central Texas and west of Islas Galapagos.

Graphical guide
The new version of BGAN LaunchPad provides a graphical guide to locating the I-4 Americas satellite.

However, a few older BGAN terminals may require a firmware upgrade to function on the new satellite. End-users should contact their equipment supplier if unsure.

The land-mobile Inmarsat GAN and Mini M services are now operating via the Inmarsat-3 F4 satellite at 53 degrees West. Users should continue to point their antennas at the same in-orbit location as before.

Coverage maps
Further information about the coverage provided by the new I-4 Americas satellite, including coverage maps and the new version of BGAN LaunchPad, can be found in the Support section of the Inmarsat website.

Reminder - +870 Single Inmarsat Country Code Effective 1 January 2009

Posted in Inmarsat Service Bulletins (RSS)

Now that 2008 has drawn to a close, we would like to remind you of the following important changes to Inmarsat‘s service:.

+870 Single Inmarsat Country Code Effective 1 January 2009.

Beginning 1 January 2009 calls made to Inmarsat terminals from PSTN network services must be dialed using Inmarsat’s new single country code +870 or by using one of Vizada’s Fixed2Mobile Solutions. This code replaces the four Inmarsat ocean codes: +871, +872, +873 and +874. Any calls made using the old codes will fail to connect. Please read the attached PDF document for additional information..

Contact your Delta Wave account manager today to learn how your colleagues can ensure the quality of their calls to your satellite terminal(s) while increasing the cost-effectiveness of fixed-to-mobile calls by using Satellite Direct (R) and Satellite Direct Plus (R) services instead of country code +870. .

Satellite Direct® is a double-stage fixed-to-mobile service (with no monthly fees) which allows users to place calls from any landline or wireless phone to any satellite terminal. Satellite Direct Plus® is a single-stage fixed-to-mobile service and allows users to place calls directly to mobile terminals located anywhere in the world by simply dialing a pre-assigned terrestrial number..

Inmarsat I4 Satellite Repositioning to Began in January 2009.

Earlier last year we communicated news about the repositioning of Inmarsat’s I4 satellites in an effort to optimize the network and achieve global I-4 coverage. As a reminder, repositioning of the I-4 satellite occurred when the new I-4 F3 satellite entered service on 7 January 2009 at 98 degrees West, covering the Americas. Inmarsat is committed to making every effort to minimizing any impact on customers. However, the repositioning will require two service outages affecting a small number of broadband and satellite phone service users in two limited geographical areas..

I-4 F2: 7 January - 2 February 2009 .

o BGAN - in Iceland, Ireland and parts of West Africa, the UK and Greenland .

o FleetBroadband - in a narrow strip of the east Atlantic Ocean.

o SwiftBroadband - in a narrow strip of the east Atlantic Ocean.

I-4 F1: 6 - 24 February 2009 .

Service outage in parts of Asia-Pacific for: .

o BGAN .

o FleetBroadband .

o SwiftBroadband, and .

o IsatPhone, LandPhone, and FleetPhone. .

Full global coverage will be introduced at the end of the repositioning process, on 24 February 2009..

Vizada Service Providers will need to remind customers using BGAN, IsatPhone and LandPhone services to point antennas to the new satellite location after repositioning of each satellite has been completed. Older BGAN terminals may also need an upgrade. FleetBroadband and SwiftBroadband terminals should re-point automatically to the satellite in its new location. However, some FleetBroadband terminals may require user intervention or software upgrades. Users of BGAN LaunchPad should ensure they have installed the most up-to-date version. .

For more information about the repositioning, including coverage areas and new versions of BGAN LaunchPad, go to www.inmarsat.com/coverage. For copies of the new coverage maps for the aeronautical and maritime services, please see the attached jpg files..

RBGAN Service Came to a Close.

Inmarsat’s R-BGAN service came to a close on 31 December 2008.

 Inmarsat - Scheduled Outage Notification

Posted in Inmarsat Service Bulletins (RSS), Vizada Bulletins (RSS)

SCHEDULED OUTAGE NOTIFICATION- Service Operational

Dear Distribution Partner,

Please be advised that as part of its satellite repositioning programme Inmarsat plans to restore all broadband services on the Inmarsat-4 (I-4) F2 satellite from 16:00 UTC on Friday, 6 February.

This is a change to the previously published schedule for users of the following services affected by the current outage on the I-4 F2:

* BGAN - in Iceland, Ireland and parts of West Africa, the UK and Greenland

* FleetBroadband - in a narrow strip of the east Atlantic Ocean

* SwiftBroadband - in a narrow strip of the east Atlantic Ocean

Users in the above outage areas will have service restored at the same time as BGAN, FleetBroadband and SwiftBroadband traffic in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) is transferred from the I-4 F1 to I-4 F2 satellite, currently scheduled to begin at 16:00 UTC on 6 February.

In a further change to the schedule, Inmarsat satellite phone services (SPS), including IsatPhone, LandPhone and FleetPhone, will transfer from the I-4 F1 to the I-4 F2 satellite at the earlier time of 08:00 UTC on 6 February.

Distribution partners and service providers are requested to update their websites and other repositioning documentation, and where possible to contact end-users likely to be affected by these activities.

You are reminded that the second and final outage, in parts of Asia-Pacific, caused by the repositioning of the I-4 F1 satellite to 143.5 degrees East, will also begin on 6 February, starting with SPS from 08:00 UTC and broadband services from 16:00 UTC.

More information about the repositioning, including coverage maps and new versions of LaunchPad, can be found on the Inmarsat website under Support.

 JRC Fleet Broadband Terminal Update

Posted in Inmarsat Service Bulletins (RSS), JRC Product Bulletins (RSS)

I would like to advise all partners that JRC has strongly recommended that Fleet Broadband JUE-250 mobile terminals requiring full global coverage should be updated to the new satellite map after the I-4 F2 satellite re-enters service at 25 degrees East on 6 February 2009.

Note: This bulletin supersedes the recent announcement of JRC FleetBroadband terminal software version 01.06, which has been recalled. The current approved terminal software version now reverts to 01.04.

Why is the update required? Inmarsat is repositioning the I-4 F2 and F1 satellites to optimise the network in readiness for the introduction of global FleetBroadband coverage. This repositioning process commenced on 7 January and is due to end on 24 February 2009.

Without the map update the JUE-250 will have access to Inmarsat's new I-4 Americas satellite at 98 degrees West, but NOT to the repositioned I-4 F2 and I-4 F1 satellites in their new locations at 25 degrees East and 143.5 degrees East respectively. This is due to incompatibility of satellite map management (location, frequencies and coverage area).

Therefore JRC strongly recommends that after (and only after) 6 February users and service providers install the JUE-250 Satellite Map Update Tool to enable them to update their terminal with the new satellite map.

When is the update required?

F

rom 6 February 2009, the date the I-4 F2 satellite re-enters commercial service at 25 degrees East. At this point, from 16:00 UTC on 6 February, FleetBroadband traffic in the Indian Ocean Region will transfer from the I-4 F1 to I-4 F2 satellite.

Users in the Indian Ocean Region

For FleetBroadband terminals currently using the I-4 F1 in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), the satellite map must be updated after 16:00 UTC on 6 February 2009, after the transfer of traffic has been completed. If the satellite map is updated before this time, user terminals will be unable to communicate in the IOR satellite area.

Users in the Asia-Pacific Region

FleetBroadband users are reminded that the second planned I-4 service outage begins in parts of the Asia-Pacific region from 16:00 UTC on 6 February, while the I-4 F1 moves to 143.5 degrees East. This is currently scheduled to last for 19 days, ending at 18:00 UTC on 24 February.

If a JUE-250 terminal's satellite map is updated before 6 February 2009, it will be unable to communicate with the I-4 F1 in Inmarsat's new Asia-Pacific coverage region after 24 February 2009. In this case, the satellite map must be re-installed after 6 February 2009.

Obtaining the update tool

The JRC FB250 terminal JUE-250 Satellite Map Update Tool is downloadable from the Inmarsat support website at:

www.inmarsat.com/Support/FleetBroadband/Firmware.aspx

For any queries, users are advised to approach their Inmarsat service provider for update support. It should be noted that if the JUE-250 Satellite Map Update Tool is downloaded over the air, it will add cost to users' airtime bills. The file size is around 1.5MB.

Customer queries relating to the terminal or tool should be addressed to the JRC contacts below.

· SwiftBroadband - in a narrow strip of the east Atlantic Ocean.

Please note: this is a change to the previously published end-date for this outage, which was originally scheduled for 2 February. The outage will now end after the transfer of services from the I-4 F1 to the I-4 F2 satellite, starting at 16:00 UTC on 6 February.

At this time, 16:00 UTC on 6 February, those end-users currently receiving broadband services in the Indian Ocean Region through the I-4 F1 satellite will experience a short outage, scheduled to take place within a window of approximately one hour, while these services are transferred to the I-4 F2 satellite.

On resumption of service, all BGAN users in Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia (as far east as Bangladesh) will need to re-point their terminals at the I-4 F2 satellite in its new in-orbit location at 25 degrees East.

Before and during the outage, BGAN customers can use the latest version of BGAN LaunchPad to help determine the new location of the I-4 F2 satellite and to re-point their terminal in readiness for the re-commencement of service.

Users of Inmarsat's FleetBroadband and SwiftBroadband services will automatically lock on to the new satellite and need take no further action. However, some BGAN and FleetBroadband terminals may require software upgrades. End-users should contact their equipment supplier if unsure.

The transfer of broadband services to the I-4 F2 satellite, commencing at 16:00 UTC on 6 February, also marks the start of the second and final planned I-4 outage for these services, to enable the repositioning of the I-4 F1 satellite to 143.5 degrees East. This outage will last until 24 February, and will affect a limited number of BGAN, FleetBroadband and SwiftBroadband users in parts of Asia-Pacific.

More information about the repositioning, including coverage maps and new versions of LaunchPad, can be found on the Inmarsat website under Support. Go to: Inmarsat Coverage.

Should you have any questions, feel free to contact us at any time.

I-4 Satellite Repositioning Changes to IP Address Range for BGAN, FBB and SBB

Posted in Inmarsat Service Bulletins (RSS), Stratos Bulletins (RSS)

Changes to Americas and Asia Pacific IP Address Ranges for BGAN, FBB and SBB

What changes are being made?

On Monday, February 16, 2009 Stratos will add a new range of IP addresses for the I-4 Americas and I-4 Asia Pacific satellites. For terminals in the Americas/AsiaPac footprint we are replacing European IP addresses with American IP addresses to meet customer requirements. While customers will not have to make any adjustments in the short term, it is important that they are aware of these changes.

How does this impact me?

Users in the EMEA region will not be impacted as their IP addresses are not changing.

For users in the Americas/AsiaPac regions, Stratos will implement a new range of IP addresses for RegularAccess and TransparentAccess. The current range is 212.165.64.0/20 and the new range will be 216.86.240.0/20. The immediate impacts for users in the Americas/AsiaPac regions are:

  • RegularAccess: The User Terminal will receive a private dynamic IP address. This is automatically translated into a public IP address which is shared by all users of RegularAccess. This public IP address will change and will be from the new range.
  • TransparentAccess Dynamic: For users that use a public dynamic IP address, new data sessions will automatically get a public IP address from the new range.
  • TransparentAccess Static IP:
    • Users with an existing static IP address in the Americas/AsiaPac regions will keep their current IP address. There is no change at this stage (see below for more information).
    • Users who require a new TransparentAccess public static IP address will automatically receive an IP address from the new range when they provision this in Stratos Dashboard.

Mandatory Changes for Users in the Americas/AsiaPac Footprint (Longer Term)

Stratos will continue to support the current European IP address range for 12 months for customers that use existing static IP addresses in the Americas/AsiaPac footprint. It is important that you change these IP addresses within the next 12 months using the steps listed below. Stratos will send out reminders in the final 6 months.

Also, customers that use their terminal in the Americas/AsiaPac footprint and have a static IP address from the European range can change to an address from the US range via Stratos Dashboard by going through the following steps on or after February 16:

<!--[if !supportLists]-->1.    <!--[endif]-->Retrieve the details of the User Profile for which you would like to change the IP address

<!--[if !supportLists]-->2.    <!--[endif]-->Change "static" into "dynamic" in the drop-down list for Americas/AsiaPac IP address

<!--[if !supportLists]-->3.    <!--[endif]-->Click OK and confirm the Order

<!--[if !supportLists]-->4.    <!--[endif]-->Once the order is completed, retrieve the details for the User Profile again

<!--[if !supportLists]-->5.    <!--[endif]-->Change "dynamic" into "static" again in the drop-down list for Americas/AsiaPac IP address

<!--[if !supportLists]-->6.    <!--[endif]-->Click OK and confirm the Order

Note: IP-ranges given here are valid now. Stratos reserves the right to change and expand public IP ranges for the BGAN family of services.

 TPC Accellerator 2

Posted in Inmarsat Service Bulletins (RSS)

Inmarsat is planning to launch version 2 of its TCP Accelerator software at the end of November 2009.

TCP Accelerator v2 is an upgrade to the current version of TCP Accelerator v1, designed to enhance the performance of applications that use TCP (transmission control protocol).

TCP Accelerator v2 will deliver faster transfers of electronic files to and from BGAN User Terminals. Improvements will vary depending on the type of files sent. However, TCP Accelerator v2 is proven to enhance the throughput performance of compressible files, resulting in faster transfer times.

As with TCP Accelerator v1, a network version of this application will be installed on the BGAN network by upgrading the existing TCP Accelerator servers. In addition, end-users will need to install the client version of the software in order to gain the full benefit.

Distribution Partners and end-users are not required to modify their network. Inmarsat will be activating the new service for all APNs and will work with DPs to ensure there is no impact on our broadband services in the run-up to the end of November. TCP Accelerator v2 has been tested extensively on the Inmarsat shared infrastructure using common applications. No issues have been found. We will continue with a test campaign to ensure applications and services remain unaffected.

TCP Accelerator v2 will be available for download from the Support section of the Inmarsat website (www.inmarsat.com/support) for both Land Mobile (including Land Vehicular) and FleetBroadband user terminals. It will also available for download from the LaunchPad update server, accessible via both the BGAN and FleetBroadband LaunchPad.

Inmarsat will send a follow-up notification two weeks before the activation date to confirm service release.
