ICO Approved for Ancillary Terrestrial Component Use By FCC

Posted in General Industry News (RSS)

ICO Global Communications (Holdings) Limited (NASDAQ: ICOG) today announced that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved the application of its subsidiary, New ICO Satellite Services G.P., to utilize an ancillary terrestrial component (ATC) in conjunction with its mobile satellite services (MSS).

ATC authority will allow ICO to use its 20 megahertz of 2 GHz spectrum for two-way terrestrial communications to enhance coverage and capacity of its MSS system by integrating terrestrial base stations into its network. In granting the ATC authority, the FCC also approved ICO's requests to use the spectrum in a more efficient manner, consistent with rules of operation for comparable terrestrial spectrum.

ICO is currently conducting trials of MSS/ATC services in the Las Vegas, Nevada and Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina markets, including a mobile interactive media service known as ICO mim(TM). ICO mim is one of many advanced services that ICO will be able to deploy using its MSS/ATC system. ICO is engaged in development efforts that will permit the MSS/ATC system, over time, to offer a range of nationwide, interactive, broadband-enabled services.

"ATC approval is yet another major milestone achieved by ICO, and we thank the FCC for their continued efforts in support of a new generation of mobile satellite services," commented Tim Bryan, chief executive officer for ICO. "With operating rules that are now aligned with all of the major wireless service spectrum bands, ICO is well-positioned to leverage the economies of scale for equipment and technology deployment to provide the seamless, nationwide service experience that only mobile satellites can deliver."

Use of the ATC authority is subject to ICO's compliance with FCC regulations and conditions of the order, a copy of which may be found on the FCC's website at: http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DA-09-38A1.doc and on the About Us page of www.ICO.com.

The Past, The Present, and The Future

Posted in General Industry News (RSS)

The Past, The Present, and The Future
Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellite systems provide various satellite communications systems and handheld satellite services in North America. Ten years ago, mobile satellite services (MSS) took communications to a new level in making handheld satellite services portable for the first time.

Today, four MSS operators offer voice and data services to North America. Depicted below are the basic services offered and available from each provider.

Blue Sky table with captions

When considering the tables above, it is important to know specifically what it is you are looking for or hope to accomplish with your satellite coverage. If a company’s primary concern is data services, then any provider will deliver optimal coverage. However, if a primary concern is global coverage, there is only one service of choice that offers optimal coverage while another provider does not have any degree of coverage available. Let’s say for example that voice and mobile data services are options you would like to have available, but you do not require optimal coverage of these features. In this instance, a company can settle for partial coverage from a company such as SkyTerra (formerly Mobile Satellite VenturesMSV) as opposed to necessitating optimal coverage from a provider like Iridium.

The satellite provider of choice for any company depends upon the services they require. The graph on the previous page does show that services vary, but to get the best overall service, the choice is clear. Something also important to consider when reviewing current services is to ask what services will made available in the near future? The first table on the previous page offers a glimpse into what nexgen services are planned to be made available to customers.

in addition to the four satellite providers outlined in the tables, there is one new anticipated player — TerreStar — which has two satellites under construction and is planning their first launch in either this year or next (originally scheduled for 2007/8).

TerreStar’s TerreStar-I will be the world’s largest and most powerful commercial satellite and is expected to better existing satellites’ signal sensitivity and number of spot beams generated. Such a system would cause quite a change for MSS in the U.S., but there are currently major uncertainties and risks associated with the system. These “challenges” include prolonged financing and the actual building and launching of satellites.

Assuming these concerns do not become a problem, TerreStar’s planned all-IP next generation mobile communications network over an integrated satellite-terrestrial system still depends on successfully deploying satellites and implementing an ATC network in order to leverage FCC licenses.

The major contenders in the U.S. satellite market: Globalstar, Inmarsat, Iridium, and SkyTerra are each able to offer different services, strengths, and weaknesses. The key to provider selection is in knowing which services, and the quality of those services, willl be available today and in the future.

 Inmarsat Partners Conference Miami

Posted in General Industry News (RSS)

Have been in Miami for the last several days for an Inmarsat Partners Conference. It has been quite interesting indeed

While there have been some interesting developments in the industry, the highlite of this show has been the FB150 Launch.

Equipment is expected to become available commercially around the end of June, and is still considered to be in Beta Test mode

Two manufacturers will offer equipment - Addvalue, and Thrane and Thrane. (We might have an Addvalue FB150 for beta test.)

Equipment pricing should be released soon, and is expected to be in the $5-6000 range, with usage pricing the same as the current FB pricing.

We feel that this will be a vialble alternative to Iridium OpenPort, in form factor, as well as competetive usage pricing.

I did take a few pictures of both units....

 FleetBroadband 150

Posted in Delta Wave News (RSS), General Industry News (RSS)

Inmarsat FleetBroadband 150 is about to be released for public consumption. I think this is a very exciting development, and will find a large market, especially amongst the over 50k current Inmarsat Mini-M users. The equipment pricing is about the same as the older Mini-M equipment, but offers a world of differences when it comes to what the service offers.

According to Thrane and Thrane: "FleetBroadband features the smallest, lightest FleetBroadband antenna to date, which enables simple user-installation, so smaller professional vessels and larger yachts with a requirement for reliable, high quality global internet and voice communication can enter the broadband era with a true IP solution for the first time."

It offers simultaneous voice and data, IP connection for e-mail and internet/intranet access, 150kbs both directions, and digital satellite phone service with exceptional call quality. Last Week, I was honored to have been invited to the official Inmarsat Launch of FleetBroadband 150 in Miami.

Last Week, I was honored to have been invited to the official Inmarsat Launch of FleetBroadband 150. Both Addvalue and Thrane and Thrane had equipment on hand. Have to say I was quite impressed with the size of the dome. The Sailor 150 is only 12" diameter x 10" high. The Addvalue 150 dome is slightly smaller.

While equipment will not ship until "June sometime", hands on demonstrations were given.

I told the Addvalue engineer that the handset volume was very low, and that they really need to increase the ringer volume, especially to accommodate the sometimes very noisy environments on some of the tugs and work vessels. A couple of days later at an Inmarsat gathering, the engineer came to me with a large grin, and said that they had obliged that request.

We hope to have a demo unit very soon.

Equipment pricing is already available, and Delta Wave will be offering an introductory price for both. (Addvalue 150 will go for $4,395.00, while the Thrane unit is $4,995.00.)

Additional information can be gathered at: Delta Wave Communications Web Site

Below are some pictures I took of the antenna units:

Globalstar Reveals Launch Plans for Next-Generation Satellites

[Satellite TODAY 01-19-10] Globalstar will launch six of its second-generation satellites during a 90-day window that opens on Jul. 5, the company announced Jan. 19.

The satellites will be launched by Arianespace from the Baikonur Cosmodrome using the Soyuz rocket.

The new Globalstar satellites, part of a constellation that secures Globalstar's space segment beyond 2025, will be integrated with the company’s satellites launched in 2007, with a mission to provide legacy and enhanced next-generation satellite voice and data services for at least the next 15 years.

“Our validation tests of the satellite subsystems and thermal vacuum tests have been successfully completed and we are on schedule to begin launching our satellites this summer,” Tony Navarra, president of global operations for Globalstar, said in a statement.
